Perry is a Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. Her parents, however, didn't want her to perform until she turned older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school, but started acting to meet new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, moved to New York in search of television roles. She landed small parts on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness led her to California for theater roles. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She performed with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on her own ABC political thriller Scandal with her father. In the same year, she appeared as a younger version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. She was cast in the role by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of this persona.
